유학 준비 #1 - 어학준비를 위한 학교 등록

일단 1차적인 목표가 현지에서 TOEFL과 GRE시험을 치고 내가 원하는 학교에 Application을 보내고, 좀더 가능하다면 현지 한국 유학생이나 교수와 직접 컨택을 해 보는 것이다. 한국에서 직장을 다니면서 준비하는것이 절대로 불가능하고 회사를 관두고 학원을 다니는것도 어떻게보면 좀더 나은 미래로 가는 도전임은 분명하지만, 아무래도 항상 들리는 한국말들 때문에 긴장감이 떨어져 실패할 확률이 크다고 느끼기 때문에, 다소 무리를 해서라도 현지에 가서 정보를 얻고 부딪혀 보는것이다.

일단 제일 먼저 준비해야할 것이 무엇일까.
미국이라는 나라는 완전한 자본주의 이기때문에 입국사유와 체류비 보증이 확실하지 않으면 비자를 발급받기가 여간 힘든것이 아니다. 그래서 일단, 떠나고자 하는 곳을 정하고, 체류기간동안 어학공부를 할 학교를 지정해야 한다. 학교마다 수업료가 큰 차이를 보이고 있기때문에 수업내용이나 주변환경등을 살펴서 정하는데만해도 많은 시간이 소요된다. 내가 필요한 정보를 바로바로 가져다 주는 것이 없기때문에, 유학관련 인터넷 까페나 정모, 경험이 있는 지인들의 이야기를 충분히 들어볼 필요가 있을것같다.

나는 텍사스주로 떠날것이고, 비자유지 및 준비기간동안의 language skill up을 위한 학교를 선택했는데, University of Houston- Downtown이다. 오전에는 인텐시브 코스를 수강하면서 오후에는 발음이나 TOEFL수업을 들어볼까 한다. 어느 학교나 다 비슷비슷한 과정이 개설되어 있는데, 문제는 비용과 환경이 주요 포인트인거 같다.

그래서, UHD ELI 디렉터에게 현재 미국에서 박사과정에 진학할 생각이고, 어학공부를 위해 등록을 하려고 하는데 어떻게 해야되는지와 어떤 서류가 필요한지를 물어봤다. 반나절도 안되서 답장이 왔다. 그 내용은 아래와 같다.

Dear Hwang:

 

You will need to take an intensive English program to improve your English skills and prepare you for the TOEFL and GRE exams.  Many universities in the US offer such programs, as does University of Houston-Downtown.  If you decide to come to our program, you do not need to download the application.  You can fill it out online and submit it, then send the required documents by mail to our International Admissions Office to be associated with the application.

 

However, if you want to send everything together, I have attached a blank application to this email.  You can print it down, fill it out, and send it with your documents to the English Language Institute at UHD.  If it comes to me first, I will be able to track it through the university admissions system and make sure it does not meet an obstacle.

 

UHD doesnot offer a doctorate in engineering.  However, our sister institution does, which is just a few miles away.  Once you finish your English you can transfer to that university.  However, for the purpose of your I-20 in that case, you should mark English only on term of study.  Then when you arrive, you can extend it to accommodate your doctoral program.

일단 첨부된 international student를 위한 application form과 관련 서류를 자신에게 보내달라는 것이다. 일단 받은 서류를 작성하고 관련 서류를 하나하나 챙겨보려고 한다.
